What’s Your Role as a Parent?
The Rolls n Goals journal is here to help your child become the best version of themselves, on and off the mat! It’s their personal space to track progress, set goals, and reflect on their journey in Jiu-Jitsu. While it’s designed for kids to take charge, your role as a parent is still super important—especially for younger athletes just starting out.
The journal teaches your child that being an elite athlete isn’t just about showing up to train—it’s about taking charge of their growth. By owning the responsibility to track their journey, they learn accountability, focus, and pride in their hard work. These are skills that go beyond the mat and into every part of life.
1
Cheer Them On
Be their biggest cheerleader! Remind them that journaling is their tool for growth and celebrate when they take the time to use it. A quick, “Great job sticking with your journal!” goes a long way.
2
Make It Fun
For younger kids, journaling might feel new or challenging, so make it exciting! Encourage them to use coloured markers, stickers, or doodles to bring the intentionally plain pages to life with their favourite colours and designs. You can also spark ideas by asking fun questions like:
“What move made you feel unstoppable today?”
“What’s one cool thing you want to master next?”
Adding a creative twist makes journaling feel less like a task and more like a fun way to express themselves!
3
Let Them Lead
The journal is theirs to own, so encourage independence. If they forget to use it, give a gentle nudge, but let them take responsibility. It’s a great way for them to learn discipline.
4
Celebrate Their Wins
Did they write about executing a high level submission? Or maybe they recorded their first competition experience? Celebrate those moments with them! Acknowledging their effort builds confidence and keeps them motivated.
5
Support, Don’t Take Over
Your role isn’t to do the journaling for them—it’s to support their effort. If they’re stuck, guide them with questions or ideas, but let them fill the pages in their own words.
6
Work With Their Coach or Mentor
Talk to their coach or mentor to align their journaling with their training. Coaches can suggest areas to focus on, making the journal even more effective.
